What Is a Merge Game? How Merging Works, With Examples
A merge game is a game where you combine two or more identical items to make one new, better item. Two 2s make a 4 in 2048. Three bushes make a tree in Triple Town. Two cherries make a strawberry in Suika Game. Merging is the main action, and the goal is usually to reach the top item, complete a collection or fill orders before you run out of space.
How merging works
Every merge game is built on the same loop:
- Find matching items. Two (or three) of the same thing, at the same level.
- Merge them. They disappear, and one item of the next level takes their place.
- Make room. Each merge frees space on the board, and you need that space for new items.
- Climb the chain. The items form a ladder, called a merge chain, and the top of the ladder is the goal.
The tension comes from space. New items keep arriving and the board is small, so a merge game is really a game of keeping enough room for the next merge.
The four main types of merge games
| Type | How you merge | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Number merge | slide tiles; equal numbers combine | Threes!, 2048 |
| Merge-3 | put three or more equal items together | Triple Town, Merge Dragons! |
| Merge-2 | drag one item onto an identical one | Merge Mansion, Travel Town |
| Physics merge | drop items; equal ones merge when they touch | Suika Game (the Watermelon Game) |
Number merge. The board is a grid of numbered tiles. Every swipe slides all the tiles, and two equal tiles that collide become one tile with their sum. 2048 made this famous in 2014, building on Threes!, which came out earlier the same year.
Merge-3. Three or more equal items placed together turn into one item of the next level. Triple Town is the classic example. Merge Dragons! adds a bonus: merge five at once and you get two items instead of one.
Merge-2. You drag one item onto an identical one. Most of today's mobile merge games work this way, usually with a story: you merge tools and materials to fill orders and restore a house, a town or a garden.
Physics merge. Items drop into a container and roll around, and when two equal ones touch, they merge into the next size. Suika Game, also called the Watermelon Game, went viral in 2023: you drop fruit into a box and try to make a watermelon before the box overflows.
Merge games vs match-3 games
They look alike, but a match ends differently:
- In a match-3 game like Candy Crush, matching items disappear. The goal is clearing the board.
- In a merge game, matching items become something new. The goal is building up.
Triple Town sits in between: you match three, but the match leaves a better item behind.
Why merge games are so satisfying
- Every merge is progress you can see. The new item is bigger, nicer or worth more.
- Chain reactions. In merge-3 and physics merge games, one merge can create the item that completes the next one, so a single move can set off a cascade.
- Short sessions. A few merges fit into a minute, and there's always room for one more.
- A clear goal. The next item in the chain is always in sight.
Tips that work in most merge games
- Keep space free. Running out of room ends most merge games. Merge low-level items early, unless you're waiting to complete a bigger group.
- Build towards one corner. In 2048, keeping the biggest tile in a corner makes the next merges much easier to line up.
- Merge in bigger groups when it pays. In merge-3 games, merging five instead of three often gives a bonus.
- Look ahead. Before you slide or drop, check which item comes next.
Questions
Is 2048 a merge game?
Yes. It's the best-known number merge game: two equal tiles combine into one tile with their sum.
Is Candy Crush a merge game?
No. Candy Crush is a match-3 game. Matched candies disappear instead of turning into a new item.
What is a merge-2 game?
A merge game where two identical items make one item of the next level, usually by dragging one onto the other.
Is there a merge game on SalutGames?
Not yet. Our games are platformers, mazes, puzzles, timing and one-button games. The closest to the merge feeling is Block Drop, a block puzzle where you also play against the space on the board: three blocks at a time on an 8x8 grid, full rows and columns clear, and the game ends when nothing fits.
