Skyhook Tips: How to Get the Perfect Release

Skyhook is a game about one decision, repeated: the courier hangs from an anchor, swings, and lets go. The swing is a real pendulum, so a release at the wrong moment sends the courier along whatever the momentum says, which is usually down.

A perfect release works differently. The game calculates a flight arc that ends in the exact centre of the next anchor's ring, allowing for sliding anchors and for wind. A good release still reaches the ring, but off-centre: short and low when it came early, long and high when it came late. That leftover offset is what makes the following swing awkward, and it's the main reason to chase perfects.

What a streak is worth

A good release scores 50 points and resets the combo. A perfect scores 100, and every perfect after it in an unbroken chain adds another 50, up to 500 points from the ninth perfect onward.

Storm Front, eighth perfect in a row: 100 plus seven steps of 50, so the release scores 450.
Storm Front, eighth perfect in a row: 100 plus seven steps of 50, so the release scores 450.

That curve is steep. Ten perfect releases in a row score 3,200 points. The same ten releases with one good release in the middle, five perfects, a good, then four perfects, score 1,750.

Why waiting one swing always works

Every hazard in Skyhook, from crane hooks to live wires, signs, birds and gust fans, runs on a cycle exactly two swings long. The code says why in a comment: so that a blocked release window is always followed by a clear one.

The dotted guide shows where a perfect release would go right now, and a red ✕ on it means something is in the way. Letting that swing pass is never a waste, because the next one is clear by design.

Solar Array, with a red ✕ on the dotted guide. This swing is blocked, so it is one to let pass.

Two more rules sit underneath. Hazards and tokens are only ever placed between fixed anchors, never next to a sliding one. And a crumbling red anchor is never followed by a hazard, since waiting out a blocked swing would let it break under the courier. On a red anchor, the first good swing is the one to take.

The twelve climbs

Climb Anchors Perfect 3-star streak
First Ascent 7 306 ms 3
Crane Alley 8 278 ms 3
Live Wires 9 259 ms 3
Neon Signs 9 246 ms 4
Night Flight 10 230 ms 4
Midnight Rush 10 214 ms 4
Storm Front 10 214 ms 5
Radio Silence 11 193 ms 5
Eye of Thunder 11 180 ms 5
Thin Air 11 193 ms 6
Solar Array 12 168 ms 6
Skyhook 13 156 ms 6

The perfect window is the full time a release counts as perfect, worked out from each climb's swing speed and window in the game's settings. It narrows by half across the game. The good window is roughly twice as wide at every step, 630 ms on First Ascent and 350 ms on the final climb.

Sunset Yards opens with no hazards at all on First Ascent, adds a swinging crane hook in Crane Alley, and brings live wires and the first crumbling anchor in Live Wires.

Neon District adds swinging signs and sliding anchors. The guide already leads a sliding anchor, so there is no need to aim ahead of it. Night Flight sends two flocks of birds, and Midnight Rush has two sliding anchors in one climb.

Radio Storm is the only world with wind. It pushes the courier sideways in flight, and it grows from Storm Front to Eye of Thunder, the climb with four different hazards. Radio Silence brings the gust fans, and the wind there blows the other way.

Orbital Rise has lighter gravity, 930 against 1,100 in the other worlds, so every flight hangs in the air a little longer. Thin Air is the one place in the game where the perfect window widens again, to 193 ms. The final climb, Skyhook, has 13 anchors, five hazards and the narrowest window of all.

Rescues and stars

A fall isn't the end of a climb: a rescue drone carries the courier back up, twice per climb. The three stars are for reaching the summit, finishing without a rescue, and landing that climb's perfect streak at least once.

In the settings, effects such as screen shake and flashes can be turned off, and they start off on devices that ask for reduced motion. On a computer, Space or Enter releases, Esc or P pauses, and R retries.
