Matchstick Puzzle

Move one match to make the sum true.

About Matchstick Puzzle

Matchstick Puzzle brings back the classic match puzzle from the back of the newspaper. The numbers are built from matches like the digits on a clock, so one match can turn a 6 into an 8, a minus into a plus, or a 9 into a 5. Each level tells you what to do: move, add or remove a set number of matches so the sum becomes true. When it is right, every match head catches fire and the whole sum lights up.

There are 200 levels in five worlds. The Kitchen Table starts with one-move sums. The Chalkboard adds two-digit numbers and asks you to add or take away a match. Picnic Squares switches to shapes: move or remove matches to leave an exact number of squares, with no loose matches. The Campfire brings two-move sums and triangle puzzles, and the Midnight Desk ends with three-term sums and three-move puzzles. Solve 30 levels in a world to open the next one.

Stuck? A hint shows which match to move and where it goes, with a glowing arrow. Hints cost a star, and every three perfect solves earn you a new one. Undo takes back your last move and Reset puts the level back as it started. Sparky, a cheerful little matchstick, explains each new kind of puzzle the first time you meet it.

How to play

  1. Read the goal at the top: it says whether to move, add or remove matches, and how many.
  2. Drag a match to a dotted spot. The match floats above your finger, and the spot where it will land glows gold. You can also tap a match, then tap the spot.
  3. To remove a match, tap it. To add one, drag a new match out of the matchbox.
  4. When the sum is true (or the shape has the right number of squares or triangles), every match lights up and the level is solved.

Solve a level without hints for three stars. Each hint you use costs one star.

Tips & tricks

  • Think like a clock. Each digit has seven places for a match. Count what changes: 6 to 8 needs one match more, 9 to 3 needs one less.
  • Check the signs. A minus plus one match becomes a plus, and a plus can give a match away to become a minus.
  • Look at both sides. Sometimes the answer is in the result, not in the first number.
  • Squares must be closed. In shape puzzles, every match has to belong to a square or a triangle. Count only the small ones.
  • Two moves can use the same match. In two-move levels you may move one match twice.
